Atum Intro
The Everlasting Gaze
> Doomsday Clock
> Once in a Lifetime
Iha: Thank you so much, Charlotte, North Carolina, how are you? We are the Smashing Pumpkins, we are glad to be here, thank you so much.
Today
Perfect
Disarm (acoustic)
The Celestials
Purple Blood
Ava Adore
(BC after Jimmy solo: Ow! Mr. Jimmy Chamberlin on the drums! Juh juh juh juh juh juh juh (deep voice) Jimmy, Jimmy, Jimmy. Ow!)
Iha: Thank you, thank you Charlotte. How are you guys doin’? Thumbs up? Evil hands up? It’s so hot and so humid. Uh, we appreciate you staying through all the rock...and all the humidity.
BC: James, how you feelin’ to-night?
Iha: I feel great! Heh heh. How you doin’?
BC: Normally, my friend, I’m in existential crisis. For some reason, I took the day off today.
Iha: Nice, nice.
BC: Before we get around to our thank yous, we’d like to thank the NWA wrestling talent that appeared today. This of course is Crockett company. Crockett country. NWA company, Crockett country. Sorry, I’ll figure it out. This is Crockett country. So of course we always pay tribute to the great Crockett family here in Charlotte. And we’d like to thank the Interpols.
Iha: We’d like to thank the darkness of the Interpol.
BC: James, I get the feeling they liked the bleak new wave more than they liked the wrestling, but that’s just me, maybe I’m sensitive.
Iha: They like –- well, they like both, I don.... They have to do both.
BC: And of course Rival Sons –- I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to interrupt you.
Iha: No no, go.
BC: Rival Sons, what a great band, thank you, boys. We’re so blessed to be on this fantastic tour, thank you for filling up this building for us tonight. He may look like a space cowboy now, but back in the day, this young man and I started this band in my father’s bedroom, somewhere around 1987, ‘88.
Iha: Oh my god.
BC: 36 years ago.
Iha: Super long time ago.
BC: We could’ve come in and won the Crockett Cup, but instead we stayed at home, we learned our guitars.
Iha: Yes.
BC: We wrote songs with no future.
Iha: Yes.
BC: And here we are. [2-3 unintelligible words]!
Iha: Hahaha. I like that phrase.
BC: Anyway, we can’t thank you enough for 36 years of supporting our band, thank you. And this is my favorite part of the show because not only do I get to thank each and every one of you personally, we get to dedicate this next song to you, it’s a little song back from 1994. James, do you remember 1994?
Iha: I do not.
BC: It was a good year. You were touring high on Siamese Dream –- not that you were high, you were high on Siamese Dream. And uh, about 1994, we were writing this little song here. It’s a deep cut. We apologize in advance to those of you who just wanna hear the hits. It’s a deep cut. For those in the know, you might wanna sing along, it’s a little song we like to call Tonight, Tonight.
Tonight, Tonight (Billy/Iha acoustic)
Bullet with Butterfly Wings
This Time
Spellbinding
Hubble Bubble (Toil and Trouble)
> Jellybelly
Iha: Thank you very much. We’re at that pivotal point of the show where we ask if you wanna rock more. Alright.
BC: I’m hearing some nos.
Iha: Well...what are you gonna do?
BC: We could do some gentle jams.
Iha: Sure.
BC: You know that kinda, what do they call it?
Iha: Gen–
BC: Jam band?
Iha: What’s that?
BC: Like jam band, you know?
Iha: Yeah, sure. (Billy plays a blues lick and then goes into a blues riff) We played the HORDE Festival back in the day. (Iha joins in)
BC: (singing) There’s a train a-comin’. There’s a big train waiting for you.
Iha: Don’t worry, we’re gonna get back to songs that we’ve worked on recently.
(Billy and Iha stop)
BC: I think...first of all, what day of the week (laughing) is it?
Iha: Heh heh heh.
BC: Every day, heh, every day is the same for me. Is it Monday?
Crowd: No!
BC: (laughing) Is it Tuesday?
Crowd: Yes!
BC: I have no idea what day it is, what day is it?
Crowd: Tuesday!
Iha: (high pitched) It’s Time to Rock Day!
BC: (laughing) Is it Rock Day? Rock Day!
Iha: I mean...
BC: Newest day of the week, what the Beatles sang about: Rock Day.
Iha: ...it’s [unintelligible], Rock Day.
BC: James....
Iha: Yes?
BC: We may not be 20 anymore.
Iha: No.
BC: But it’s happened.
Iha: What’s that?
BC: That we’ve rocked harder than the audience can handle.
Iha: It’s possible.
BC: It’s happened!
Iha: Combined with the humidity index, it’s possible that we’ve rocked them out. I mean, I think everyone’s had a reasonable time.
BC: People get tired.
Iha: They were rocked out.
BC: They wanna vape. They wanna lay down and vape, you know, you get tired.
Iha: You can do whatever you want. Come to a rock show.
BC: It’s a free country, at least it what used to be [sic]. Anyway.... I think you need to get out the James Rock-o-Meter. Heh, get out the James Rock-o-Meter and let’s detect this level of rockness that’s happening right here.
(crowd cheers)
Iha: I think –- I think that’s pretty good actually, that’s like a...
BC: I don’t buy it.
Iha: ...seven point eight.
BC: I don’t buy it.
Iha: That was pretty good.
BC: They’ve had some hard times with the basketball team and the football team, they’re tired. You got your Hornets--
Iha: Now you brought that up.
BC: You got your Panthers.
Iha: They’re –- they’re like, we came to escape that, we just wanted to see some rock.
BC: You got your Hurricanes. It’s so hot here that they don’t even play on ice, they just skate on water. I think you need to get the Rock Meter back out one more time, I’m not buying it.
(crowd cheers)
Iha: (high pitched) Alright! Charlotte!
Empires
(BC immediately after final lyrics: Charlotte!)
