Order of bandsThe Smashing Pumpkins

Earlier in the day, the band stopped at Zia Records in Phoenix to sign autographs. This show was a free concert set up by a local radio station and announced on the radio that morning. The plan was to do a small set for 100 people, followed by another signing, but so many people showed up that the band ended up splitting their allotted time into separate sets with the audience turned over in between.[1][2]

Notes[edit | edit source]

Banter[edit | edit source]

Iha: How are you doing? You seem like a wild crowd.
This Time
Tonight, Tonight
Rock On
(BC over Iha solo: Stevie Nicks on the lead guitar.)
BC: Thank you very -– can you hear me? –- go, rock on. Thank you very much for being so patient waiting for us, you don’t even know how much it means to us, thank you so much. We’d like to do a -– another song off our forthcoming, world assimilating, death-defying, Britney Spears crushing album. This is a song, uh...(Jimmy starts drums)...don’t cry, it’s really sad. Does that make you wanna cry?
The Crying Tree of Mercury
Glass and the Ghost Children
BC: Thank you all so very much, thank you. (Elvis impression) Thank you much. (normal) There’s only one problem: you guys live in the desert, heh, like...there’s like sand in the air, it’s like, you know.... I know, you’re [unintelligible]. (intro strumming for Disarm) What? Heh heh. I don’t, heh, I don’t know what that was, that was very hard. So, um, we’d like to play you an older song now. (crowd cheers) Yes, all the older songs are better, they tend to get the bigger cheers, um....
Disarm
(Jimmy and Melissa start To Sheila)
BC: Did he ask what your sign was? Many people do not know that Melissa and I have the same birthday. Melissa is six years older than me, but it’s the same birthday. That’s why A: we get along so well and B: we are both going to take over the world. ... This young man up front has some strong opinions about the band Hole, uh, we do not share them but uh...it’s a new millennium and everyone’s going to forgive each other. Okay, hello there.
To Sheila
Bullet with Butterfly Wings
BC: Thank you, you guys rock, thanks.
Iha: Thanks a lot, heh heh.
[encore break]
Iha: (high pitched) Oh well. (normal) Thanks a lot. Alright. You people ready to rock acoustically once more?
BC: So is the real reason that you -– is the real reason that you weren’t here earlier in the first thing that we did is because you all have jobs and you’re responsible? (crowd cheers) Or is it because you’re all stoned and lazy?
Iha: Yes.
BC: That’s what I thought. Are you feelin’ this one, James?
Ava Adore
BC: If you don’t mind, we’d like to play one more song for you, one more song for you, one more song for you! I’m playing this song just for you, ‘cause you’re crazy. Before we play this next song, we’d like to thank you one more time, you guys are amazing, amazing. Amazing, amazing, amazing, amazing. We thank you from the bottom of our disgusting black hearts. Alright, it’s been a while, so yeah.
Cherub Rock
BC: Ladies and gentlemen, Jimmy Chamberlin on the drums. James Iha on the guitar. Melissa Auf der Maur on the bass. Thank you.
Iha: Ow!
