February 26, 1997 was the 39th Annual Grammy Awards. The Smashing Pumpkins won Best Hard Rock Performance for "Bullet with Butterfly Wings" – their first Grammy – although they lost in the additional six categories they were nominated for:

The event included two interviews with the band, a performance of "1979" and the acceptance speech. "1979" was performed with Matt Walker on drums, and former Nine Inch Nails drummer Chris Vrenna on a second kit. The performance notably made heavy use of electronic sampling and beats, akin to the Roli Mosimann remixes found on the 1979 (Mixes) release from Virgin.
