November 14, 1996 was the MTV Europe Video Music Awards. The Smashing Pumpkins won the Best Rock category, competing against Bon Jovi, Die Toten Hosen, Metallica and Oasis. Before accepting the band's award, D'arcy Wretzky joked that "Oasis should have won this, seeing as how they're the best band since The Beatles and all." The Smashing Pumpkins were also nominated for the Best Group award, which Oasis won.

Banter[edit | edit source]
D’arcy: Oh, sorry, I really feel bad because, you know, Oasis should’ve won this, they are the best band since The Beatles, but thank you anyway.
Iha: Thanks, thank you very much. Thanks to everybody in Europe who supported us.
BC: Yeah, we’re happy to be part of the oncoming American invasion, landing on your shores immediately. Thank you!
