The Smashing Pumpkins' April 27, 1994 performance was an unannounced surprise show for the venue's reopening, closed since 1989 after sustaining damage during the Loma Prieta earthquake.
“ | The speaker column fell over and smashed about three of James’s guitars. And we were told, we were given this great distinction, you will be the band that would re-open the historic venue that hosted Jimi Hendrix and Janis Joplin and the Grateful Dead and you’re like, “Great.” So we were very excited and very honored because a lot of those bands were our heroes. And then we got there and we realized that we hadn’t been invited to the real opening, which was the night before, which was a private event, so all the celebrities and all the press went to that. And so we were like, “Oh okay,” and then we were playing with the legend on the bill who hated us because we were too loud. | ” |

Today
Cherub Rock
BC: Thanks, thanks a lot.
Drown
> Hummer
BC: Thank you very much. Well...the spirit of –- the spirit of Jimi Hendrix must be here because my guitar will not stay in tune. Just like Jimi.
Iha: But at least he didn't have, uh, side fills almost killing him, smashing all his guitars.
BC: We'd like to, uh, take this opportunity to, uh, thank all the -– all the opening peoples. Thank you, all you numerous peoples who opened today. (crowd cheering loudly) Well, I wish we could participate in more -– shut up –- I wish we could participate in more eclectic type bills, unfortunately everybody wants to put rock over here and everything else over here, so...sorry that's the way it is. (crowd yelling) We only have one rule. The only rule we have is we don't take requests. We are not a bar band.
Luna
Siva
[encore break]
BC: Once again, we do not take requests, but thank you anyway. We're gonna attempt to play a song in tune, uh, hope you like it. Uh, the listening experience is usually a lot more pleasurable when the guitars are actually in tune. (plays opening chords of Silverfuck and crowd cheers) Thank you very much. This next song.... Oh, everything hurts: my finger, my throat and back, knees, uh, the cabinets fell off and broke one of James's guitars.
Iha: And almost killed one of our crew people, heh. (Silverfuck intro begins) I thought it destroyed all my guitars except for the one, when I found out, it was like “great”, heh heh. I'll try to be happy now. I just -– the sudden death of someone and...all my guitars getting smashed, okay. I don't know, let's rock.
BC: Why don't you tell everyone how much you loved that guitar? I think we should do a little eulogy for the guitar. (a little louder) I think we should do a little eulogy for the guitar. Please tell everyone how much you loved that guitar.
Iha: Oh, I loved it a real lot, heh. I can't even look at it.
BC: Come on, bring it out. (crowd cheers)
Iha: Yes, this was a limited edition guitar that we used on our last record, heh heh, and thanks for the proper placement of this—-
BC: As used on Siamese Dream.
D’arcy: This was James's favorite guitar.
BC: I think we should all have a moment of silence for the guitar. (pause) Thank you.
D’arcy: Don't cry, James. We'll buy you another one.
BC: Maybe -– maybe Snatch can lend you a Ibanez.
Iha: It was a friend of mine and now it's dead.
Silverfuck / Over the Rainbow
[encore break]
Guy in crowd: Drum solo!
BC: We don't believe in drum solos. If you want to watch somebody masturbate...go to a...something. Something. Though Jimmy will masturbate on your posters.
Guy in crowd: Drum solo! Drum solo!
BC: Don’t you get it? We don't do drum solos, even me. What kinda –- what kinda English do you want me to say it in? (Spanish accent) No drum-a solo. (normal voice) Neine sprechen the drum. So this is our last (Spanish pronunciation) "selecion", (normal) thank you very much for coming. We hope the rest of your acid trip goes as well.
