July 9, 1988 was The Smashing Pumpkins' very first show. It featured Billy Corgan on bass, James Iha on guitar, and a drum machine. Corgan also played bass for the opening band, Stil Life. The venue was a Polish bar called Chicago 21.
The image that appears on the handbill was clipped from the June 1979 issue of National Geographic. The article was titled "Anatomy of a Burmese Beauty Secret" and featured a Padaung woman from eastern Burma wearing golden neck rings.[1]
