Tangerines is a six-song EP by The Smashing Pumpkins touring member and collaborator, Sierra Swan. The track "Peach" was written by Billy Corgan. The EP was released digitally through Bandcamp on May 14, 2021,[1] and to most digital stores on June 21, 2021.
The self-produced EP produced the singles: "Tangerines", "I Want All of My Shit Back", "Troubled Boy", all with music videos directed by Swan herself. Videos were also released for "To the Moon" (with Swan directing) and the Corgan-penned, Linda Strawberry-directed "Peach", in which Corgan makes an appearance playing the piano.
Background[edit | edit source]
Swan described the album as "a journey, with each song completely different from the next but each celebrating freedom in a fun, almost instinctual way." She wrote, recorded, and produced all songs except "Peach" in her home studio during the COVID-19 pandemic as a means to "escape and provide a sanctuary admist the chaos."[2]
“ | I knew when I started writing this EP that it was not going to be very organic. I already made that decision based on my equipment and the necessity to work mainly in my headphones … I was also just not in a singer/songwriter kind of mood. I wanted to have fun, considering the world around me seemed to be the complete opposite at the time. | ” |

On recording with Corgan, Swan told Guitar Girl magazine: "Well, the coolest part about working with him is that we are very similar when it comes to how we work in the studio. We both, I think, don’t expect a ton of things to happen. We just let it happen. I am less anxious in the studio than I am in life. I’m more of a control freak in life than in the studio. I think he’s the same way because he also lets his gut tell him what to do during the recording process."
Reception[edit | edit source]
IndiePulse Music called it a "multi-dimensional, eclectic collection of songs," noting the edgy, dance-pop vibes of "I Want All of My Shit Back" and the "ethereal beauty" of Corgan's piano ballad "Peach".[2] Music Mecca explained "each of the six songs on the EP is able to stand alone, but still contributes to the overall mesh of the project – which is a rare feat. The eclectic influence of genres creates a backdrop for Swan’s vocals that not only shows stylistic range, but also a high music-IQ."[3]
