The album was recorded at Stratosphere Sound Studios in New York, which Schlesinger and Iha co-owned with Ivy's Andy Chase. The album was co-produced by both Iha and Schlesinger. Two songs are Iha originals: "Back With You" and "Cha Cha". An appearance of the band on Late Show with David Letterman occurred on the eve of the release, where they played the lead single "Kind Of A Girl".
AllMusic praised the band members' combined musicianship for complementing each other and being reminiscent of 60s-70s pop-rock, singling out Taylor Hanson's vocal work as being a highlight. Entertainment Weekly also commended the band's musicianship for being equal and having cohesion throughout the album. Spin magazine wrote "these bouncy, hook-crammed power-pop jams are safe and catchy enough for Jo Bros fans and Stacy’s mom alike."
Tinted Windows debuted at #59 on the Billboard 200 and peaked at #18 on the Billboard Rock chart.
The band toured 16 cities across the US and Japan throughout 2009 and early 2010. They were removed from their record label S-Curve Records' artist lineup sometime between June 6 and August 8, 2011. But in 2014, Taylor Hanson mentioned the band to the press a number of times, stating they were still together and there was "some process going on now to make a new album."
On April 1, 2020, after being hospitalized and placed on a ventilator for over a week, bassist Adam Schlesinger died of complications related to COVID-19. He was 52. On May 5, 2021, remaining members Iha, Hanson and Carlos reunited to perform "Back With You" at the 'Adam Schlesinger – A Music Celebration' live stream tribute event.
