On November 3, 1997, The Smashing Pumpkins played a surprise, unannounced opening set for Jane's Addiction at Aragon Ballroom in Chicago. The band was dressed in drag.
The brief setlist saw the last performance of "Muzzle" for another 13 months. "Bullet with Butterfly Wings" was on the setlist between "Porcelina of the Vast Oceans" and "Muzzle" but was not played.
Jane's Addiction had just reunited after a six-year hiatus. Corgan told the audience: "Jane's Addiction is such an amazing band and we're very happy to see them playing together. They certainly have been a major influence on our music as well as many other bands and I'm glad to see that maybe people will realize how important they really are, so to Jane's Addiction, we love you, thank you very much."
The Smashing Pumpkins are currently on the Spirits On Fire tour with Jane's Addiction. Prior to this and the 1997 surprise gig, the two bands had never shared the stage outside one of the Pumpkins' earliest shows on November 23, 1988 at the Cabaret Metro in Chicago. In addition, the two groups were scheduled to appear at the Welcome to Rockville festival on May 22, 2022, but due to an illness within the band, Jane's Addiction was replaced by Perry Farrell's side project, Porno for Pyros.
