Billy Corgan said of the song: "For me, it was a great kind of artistic thing to do because it was very freeing. I wasn't talking about myself or trying to represent the Smashing Pumpkins. I was trying to represent Batman." He also said the lyrics were meant to represent the "darker" 1940s Batman.
Since the single and video were released under Warner Bros, the band was unable to use them for future releases such as the Greatest Hits releases. The song and its B-sides were released in 2005 on the unofficial Rarities and B-Sides compilation.
The music video features the band in Batman-like costumes, floating in front of Batman imagery. It is notable for being only one of two to have a different drummer than Jimmy Chamberlin (Kenny Aronoff is briefly visible during the "Perfect" video) and is the only video with Matt Walker on the drums before his departure. The video was nominated at the MTV VMAs for Best Direction.
The single contained three other versions of the song. "The Guns of Love Disastrous" is an electronic instrumental, and "The Ethers Tragic" is composed solely of its guitar parts. "The Beginning Is the End Is the Beginning" is a slower version with different lyrics. It was used in a trailer for the 2009 film Watchmen, which helped the song reach the iTunes Top 100 during summer 2008, after which the band added it to their tour roster.
The song peaked at #1 on Canada and UK's rock charts, and in the top 5 in Iceland, Spain, and Norway. In the US, it reached #4 on the Alternative chart and #12 on Mainstream Rock. It placed at #40 on Australia's chart for 1997, where it was certified Gold.
There are only 11 known full live performances of the normal version, making it one of the least-performed singles. The last was in Texas on November 1, 1997.
