The album was recorded on analog tape and it was "inconceivable how much work it took". There was a lot of attention to getting the drums just right. While Chamberlin performed all drums, he would disappear for days on drug benders that caused everyone to fear for his life. After one incident, Corgan "put the hammer down", according to Vig, and had Chamberlin perform "Cherub Rock" until his hands bled. Due to Corgan's urging, Chamberlin checked into a rehab clinic.
After the drums, the rest was largely left to Corgan, who performed nearly all of the guitar and bass. After suffering a nervous breakdown, he began visiting a therapist. Consequently, his lyrics became more explicit about his troubled past. "Rocket" was the first song written for the album.
Under pressure from Virgin, Corgan worked overtime, practically living in the studio. He and Vig would sometimes work on a 45-second section for two days, working 16-hour days for weeks to achieve the sound they wanted. Corgan's desire for perfection put further strain on the already-frayed relationships between the band. Vig later recalled, "D'arcy would lock herself in the bathroom, James wouldn't say anything, or Billy would lock himself in the control room".
Virgin grew impatient as the album went over budget. The band however refused to cut corners if it meant compromising the sound. By the time recording was done, Corgan and Vig felt too exhausted to mix the record. Corgan suggested that Alan Moulder mix the album due to his work on Loveless by My Bloody Valentine. Eventually, the album was finished after four months and $250,000 over budget.
