After the unexpected success of Gish in 1991 and the release of Nirvana's Nevermind later that year, The Smashing Pumpkins were hyped as "the next Nirvana". The band was signed to Caroline Records parent Virgin Records to record Siamese Dream. Billy Corgan felt "this great pressure to make the next album to set the world on fire". The immense pressure to succeed intensified an already problematic situation: Jimmy Chamberlin was undergoing an increasingly severe addiction to heroin, James Iha and D'arcy Wretzky had recently ended a romantic relationship, and Corgan, aside from battles with weight gain and suicidal depression, was suffering from his worst-ever bout of writer's block.
Despite recording sessions fraught with difficulties and tensions, and being 4 months and $250K over budget, Siamese Dream proved a massive success, debuting at #10 on the Billboard 200. It eventually sold over 4 million copies domestically and over 6 million worldwide, cementing The Smashing Pumpkins as a critical group in alternative rock. In addition to receiving widespread critical acclaim upon its release, Siamese Dream has continually been widely regarded as one of the best albums of the 1990s, and one of the best albums of all time. Rolling Stone magazine ranked it #360 on their 500 Greatest Albums of All Time list.
Siamese Dream peaked at #4 in the UK and in the top 10 in several other countries. It has continued to occasionally re-enter national charts, such as 2000 in Norway and 2002 in Ireland. It is certified Platinum in Australia, Canada, New Zealand and the US, and Gold in the Netherlands, Sweden and the UK. It earned the band two Grammy nominations including Best Alternative Music Album. "Disarm" earned two VMA nominations, while the Rock Invasion tour earned the 1994 Club Tour of the Year award from Pollstar. The deluxe edition of Siamese Dreams holds a score of 96/100 on review aggregate site Metacritic, indicating "universal acclaim".
