Billy Corgan has said in the past that the song reflects the shaky relationship he had with his parents while growing up. However at a 2019 show, he revealed it's about an attempt to take his own life and was written on the same day as "Today", which he called his "Suicidal Anthem". Some of the mainstream unfortunately heard it differently.
The BBC banned "Disarm" from Top of the Pops because of the lyric "cut that little child," believing it drew comparison to the 1993 brutal murder of 2 year-old James Bulger which happened the year prior. That lyric along with "what I choose is my choice" and "the killer in me is the killer in you" were also met with controversy, as some read it as a reference to abortion. Corgan later explained:
"I got plenty of yelled at behind the scenes because I refused to change the lyrics … After everything I'd been through, there was gonna be no compromise, because this song was my testament to what I'd survived as a child and little could I imagine some 27 years later that people would routinely write me and talk about this song and other songs that kept them from doing the same stupid thing that I almost did."
Despite the misinterpretations, the song became a hit in the UK and beyond, and is considered an SP classic. At ~852 plays, it is the fifth most-performed song in live SP history. Some such as a 1993 British TV appearance and the 1994 MTV VMAs featured an electric rendition.
Both the Heart and Smile singles had different artwork by Corgan and covers of classic rock songs. "Landslide" later appeared on Pisces Iscariot and received significant airplay on US Modern Rock stations, peaking at #3.
"Disarm" peaked at #5 in US Mainstream Rock, at #48 on the Hot 100 Airplay, and reached the top 20 in at least 4 countries. The music video, released later that year, was nominated for Best Alternative Video and Best Editing at the 1994 MTV VMAs.
* UK Heart CD; some sources date the 7" to 1994-02-28
