"Bye June" is a song by The Smashing Pumpkins originally released on the 1989 demo album, Moon Demo. It later appeared on the Lull EP and on the 2012 reissue of Pisces Iscariot.
Background[edit | edit source]
"Bye June" was recorded in Summer 1989 at Reel Time Studios. Those sessions were intended to produce the first Smashing Pumpkins album, but ultimately the band decided against it and instead produced demo albums.
Billy Corgan has said he didn't know what to do with "Bye June" in particular, because the band was supposed to play rock, and this song was unusually acoustic for them. He believes he recorded the song entirely by himself, given the rest of the band had become exhausted with the recording sessions, though admits he doesn't recall for certain.[1]
Following the success of Gish, the record company asked The Smashing Pumpkins to put out more songs, and "Bye June" was chosen along with the Gish B-sides that appear on the Lull EP.[1]
Over time, Corgan was surprised how much people liked the song, given he comparatively put very little effort into the composition and recording. Fans often asked him who June was, so Corgan made it into a running joke to continually include the name June in songs, such as "Mayonaise", "Where Boys Fear to Tread", "1979" and "In My Body". June was the name given to the female character whom Glass was in love with in the story of Glass and The Machines of God, and by association, later in the story of ATUM. In reality, June in "Bye June" does not refer to a real person.[1]
Lyrics[edit | edit source]
Bye June
I'm going to the moon
It better be by June
'Cause I'm going to the moon
So June
You'd better make it soon
I hope you make it June
'Cause I'm going to the moon
Bye June
Bye June
I'm going to the moon
I hope you make it soon
'Cause I'm waiting on this moon
Bye June
I hope you make it too
I'm wishing you're there too
I hope you make it June
Bye bye June
Hope you make it to the moon
