Hard Times
To Scatter One’s Own
Faithless Darlin’
Apologia
BC: People always ask me where I would live if I didn’t live in Chicago and I always say Tulsa. It’s the truth too. I say, (Southern accent) Tulsa!
Guy in crowd: Yeah-uh!
BC: (normal voice) Yeah, Tulsa, yeah. (Southern accent) They say they’re wild there. (normal voice) Good people.
Guy in crowd: Okies!
BC: Do we have to talk about why they all move to Burbank though?
Cri de Coeur
Buffalo Boys
Dancehall
BC: These are songs from my new record that’s coming out in a couple weeks or so. Called Cotillions.
Anon (piano)
Cotillions (piano)
Archer
Half-Life of an Autodidact
Aeronaut
Little Maggie
Along the Santa Fe Trail
[set break]
Tonight, Tonight
Ugly
Spaceboy
The Empty Sea
Violet Rays
BC: That was a song called Violet Rays from the album Oceania. Which I believe - that version of the band may have played here, I can’t remember. There’s been so many versions of the band, it’s....
Various people in crowd: [variations on “We love ‘em all”]!
BC: Well, thank you. Whatever that was, I don’t know. Uh, this uh -
Guy in crowd: We love you, Billy Corgan!!
BC: Cool, man. It ain’t that kind of party, buddy. Let’s put it this way, once I crossed 50, I don’t give a fuck what anyone wants anymore.. And as, heh, as Dennis from The Frogs once said, all of them are good. Actually, it’s funny I’m playing this song ‘cause Dennis was in the studio during the making of this record. This is for Dennis.
Perfect
BC: (Southern accent) [3 unintelligible words due to slurring] this here song (normal voice) I wrote for the last Pumpkins album. With my brothers Jimmy and Jeff and James. And hopefully, heh, this is the last version of the band that will ever be, I would prefer that. As I like to say, Jimmy’s got two kids, James has two kids, I got two kids, everyone’s just calm now. But I wrote this song in an interesting circumstance. I was coming down with the flu, a flu which would last about a month. And I was taking whatever vegan, gluten-free pills I could take and it wacked me out of my mind. And as I was laying there passing out going to sleep, this lyric came to me, I thought “Oh fuck, do I really have to get up?” ‘Cause I was laying down, kind of dying, so I wrote the song literally like this (plays air guitar while leaning at a 45 degree angle). And I’d play it for you like that if I could...‘cause I’m tired, heh heh. But uh, you know, not every song has a message, but this one is my message to myself, I guess, so I love this song, I hope you love it too. And if you don’t (kind of jumps around as if preparing to box)....
Guy in crowd: (Rob Schneider impression) You can do it!
BC: Heh heh heh heh. Thank you, my friend.
Travels (piano)
Another Bridge to Burn
Hangin’ On
BC: Well, you’ve almost reached the end. (crowd boos) I’ve got drugs to do and legacies to destroy. Heh heh, that was one of my favorite reviews I’ve ever seen: “He’s destroying his legacy.” Unbelievable. It’s like, I started out to destroy my legacy, that’s how we started! (laughing) It’s in the DNA of the band to destroy things. You havin’ a good time? I’d like to play a spiritual. And uh, I have to imagine these people played in this venue many times, which is the Maddox Brothers and Rose. I have this song in my jukebox. But um, I know it’s an old spiritual, which you might it, the church people. Heh, someone asked me today, “Did you grow up in the church?” I was like, “Oh yeah, Roman Catholic. Masses in Latin, (imitating Latin singing).” I was like 6, I was like “What is goin’ on?” And I just saw Jesus up on that cross and I thought, “This can’t be good. This is where it ends.” “Hell, he was resurrected for you.” “No, he’s on the cross, [unintelligible word].” Heh heh heh. So this is to Jesus and to Bob Wills and all of you.
Will There Be Any Stars? (piano)
Disarm (piano)
[encore break]
Waiting for a Train That Never Comes
BC: Like to play one more song if that’s okay. Now....
Girl in crowd: [unintelligible but possibly “Law of the butterfly, baby!”]
BC: Sure baby, anything you want. Even Flow, Smells Like Teen Spirit, whatever you need. I’m just here to get you off on your ‘90s. Cosmic. (crowd yelling shit) I don’t have to play anymore, I’ll just talk to you, it’s fine, I’m tired. It’s all good.
Guy in crowd: Tumblr!
BC: Sure, alright, I’ll just take off the guitar and I’ll just talk to you, yeah, if that’s alright. (Billy takes off his guitar) Let’s just destroy some legacy, come on. I really enjoyed this show, thank you so much. (Billy drinks some water, claps for the crowd and bows) So yeah, thank me, thank me, thank you for destroying my legacy, thank you. Hope you had a good time. I’m out of music, there you go, no more music. Nuh-uh, man. When the expectation cannot meet the asshole, there’s nothing left to do than just say goodnight and thank you so much. Music - music is a fragile thing.
Guy in crowd: Play anything you want!
BC: No, it’s all good, man. Music’s a tender, fragile thing, like love. If you wanna stomp on it with your Doc Marten, wearing your flannel...as you - ah, I was gonna so terribly terrible. It involved the Bee Girl and some horrible thing. I was trying to make a ‘90s joke, heh heh. Bee too, hashtag bee too. Exactly - I could destroy legacy all night!
Guy in crowd: Remember Billy!
BC: Love you too, man. Are we in alignment now? (crowd cheers) I’ll leave it up to you. I’ll leave it up to you. Do you yell at me because you’re unhappy that I’m not doing what you wanna do? - raise your hand. Oh, now nobody wants to raise their hand. There you go, god bless you back there. (Billy puts his guitar back on) What we used to do in the Smashing Pumpkins is we’d play a medley...of all those other bands songs. So...so yeah, I can’t remember what I was gonna say before when I was gonna play the song. I just play the song, right? Okay, last thing: if you know this song, please sing along in the choruses. I will cue you as if you’re in the band. And you’ll know, you’ll know when it’s your time to sing when I do this (leans back and lifts neck of guitar). That’s your cue, but if you make a mistake, you will get the look, the infamous look, that my band members tell me I always give them when they do something I don’t want them to do.
Guy in crowd: Show us the look!
BC: It’s kind of a (turns head around, then back to reveal face like Zoolander).... I once asked a former band member what the look told her and she said, she said, “How could you ever possibly play that note in a million years, how could you be so fucking stupid?” I was like, “Oh, that’s pretty interesting.” And she said, “Is that like what you’re thinking when you give me the look?” and I said, “Absolutely, that’s exactly what I’m thinking.” So if you don’t wanna get the look, but you wanna get this (lifts neck of guitar), then all you have to do is remember, in this obligatory crowd participation moment is three numbers: two, two and four. Alright? First chorus twice, second chorus twice, last chorus four times. Can you handle that as a community? Don’t - be careful - don’t destroy your legacy. (starts guitar) I’ll rap.
Silvery Sometimes
BC: Thank you [tape cuts].
