James Corden: Welcome back, ladies and gentlemen, this is exciting, I’m here at the bar with Billy Corgan, James Iha and Jimmy Chamberlin, it’s the Smashing Pumpkins, everybody. Bless you for being here, we are so honored and excited that you are here. Now Billy, I do if you saw [sic] at the top of the show, we were talking about your tea room that you’ve got, what’s it called, Madame Zuzu’s, is this true?
BC: Yeah, thank you, thank you.
Corden: Do you remember seeing (pointing to show announcer) Ian in Madame Zuzu’s?
Iha & Jimmy: Heh heh.
BC: Occasionally drunks wander in and....
Corden: Ha!
BC: We try to give ‘em...uh, a stimulus hot, which is a yerba maté, a very very exclusive tea and then, gently....
Corden: Ease them out...
BC: Yeah, yeah.
Corden: ...that sounds –- so you did see him, that’s fantastic. Now, eh, lots to talk about, so thrilled that you’re here, you’ve just announced you are going out on tour with Jane’s Addiction, who you actually opened up for, I think...
BC: 1988.
Corden: ...in 1988--
BC: It was our third gig as a -– as the original lineup of the band and we got this call, “Do you guys wanna open for this band Jane’s Addiction?”, we already knew their music and we were like floored and it was literally our third show as our complete lineup and, yeah, we’ve known them ever since, so it’s such an honor to play with them.
Corden: That’s incredible; Jimmy, what’s the biggest difference between touring now and touring back then?
Jimmy: Uh, (points at Billy) him and I don’t share a room anymore.
Corden: Ahahahaha!
Jimmy: We don’t wake up in a lover’s embrace anymore.
BC: Yes, yeah.
Corden: That’s a -– well, that sounds like a big financial shift more than anything, would that be right? Now, I’m very excited for this new album that is coming out, it’s your –- is it your 12th studio album, is that right?
BC: You lose count at some point, you know?
Corden: Sure. But I’m hearing a rumor that this album is a rock opera...?
BC: Yes.
Corden: ...is that right...?
BC: Yes.
Corden: ...is this true?
BC: (laughing) It is true.
Corden: Tell me about this, I love this idea, this is exciting to me.
BC: It’s a 33 song triple album concept.
Corden: Oh my god, oh my god.
BC: Thank you. And uh, uh, this -– this man we were in business with, uh, he kept telling me it was a bad idea and I said I knew it was a bad idea when I started it...a year and a half ago. So yeah, we’re very excited, it’s this sort of a return to form, our –- it’s a sequel to our Mellon Collie album from 1995 and our Machina album from 2000, so....
Corden: Oh my god, this is so exciting to me. Now, you’ve chosen –- and I’m thrilled to hear you’ve chosen to play a classic song tonight...
BC: Yes sir.
Corden: ...eh, what are you gonna play, share with us what you’re gonna play for us after the break please.
BC: It’s the song Today and uh...as many people would know, it’s the song where I play the ice cream truck driver, which is based on a true story, I -– a guy in my neighborhood, uh, was suddenly giving away all his ice cream from his truck and I said, “Why is it free?” and he said, “‘Cause I’m quitting, so I’m giving away all my ice cream”. And it stuck in my mind and that’s how we ended up making the video, but um, you know, I wrote this song at a very depressing moment in my life and I thought, I knew I was gonna see you and that made me sad and then I thought, well, we’ll play the song and....
Corden: Well, we cannot wait for it, we are so thrilled that you’re playing this song...
BC: Thank you.
Corden: ...and we are honored that you are here, stick around, Smashing Pumpkins are performing right after the break, come on back everybody.
