September 17, 2021 was The Smashing Pumpkins first live performance since August 31, 2019 (the 2020 Tonight Show appearance was prerecorded). The band rehearsed at Chicago's Patio Theater for a week before the show. The theater is only blocks away from where Corgan's father used to live on Eddy Street, which is where the band first formed. This show was also the first where Corgan used his new Reverend signature guitar.
