Order of bandsThe Smashing Pumpkins

Earlier in the day, the band stopped at Zia Records in Phoenix to sign autographs. This show was a free concert set up by a local radio station and announced on the radio that morning. The plan was to do a small set for 100 people, followed by another signing, but so many people showed up that the band ended up splitting their allotted time into separate sets with the audience turned over in between.[1][2]

Banter[edit | edit source]

Cupid de Locke (tease - 4 notes)
Glass and the Ghost Children
BC: I’m being punished over here in the corner, it’s like a.... (testing keyboard) We’d like to play you a song off our first album, this is called Crush.
Crush
Guy in crowd: Thank you [unintelligible]!
BC: No, thank you. Thank you, thank you. Uh, you want a light adjustment there, Jim? Jimmy is legally blind and he’d like this light turned down, please, ‘cause he wants to stay in the dark. This is a –- this is a new song off our new album. (quickly, faux quiet) Available in stores February 29th, it’ll be in all record stores. (normal) Heh heh, hey, heh heh. And this is a song called, uh –- it’s one of our favorites and we hope you like it too -– it’s called I of the Mourning.
I of the Mourning
BC: Thank you, thank you so much. So just so you know, you know, we’re gonna do two -– two shows, one more for the people out there, but we’re not cutting this (people outside cheering) -– there you go, see? Of course we’re playing all the good songs for you and they get all the bad songs. But just so you know, we’re playing what we would’ve normally played anyway, so no one’s getting gypped and you’re just getting more. ... Ladies and gentlemen, on the bass guitar, Miss Melissa Auf der Maur...from Canada! On the lead guitar, Mr. James...“Gino Vannelli” Iha.
Guy in crowd: Jimmy!!
BC: Heh heh. On the drums, Mr. Jimmy Chamberlin.
Today
(BC over extended outro: Yes, today is the greatest day you have ever known as well. No, not because we’re standing in front of you. Not because we’re in the path of all the jets taking off and if they crash we’ll all be dead, um, today is the greatest day you’ve ever known because, yes, you’re alive. Best I can tell, you still have feelings and a heart, so we thank you very much. (Iha stops playing but Melissa and Jimmy keep going)
Iha: Yeah. People of Phoenix, come on. (song ends))
Blue Skies Bring Tears
BC: (testing guitar) Just a little more there, John. Heh heh, that’s Bruce on the phone, heh heh heh. Ahhh...alright.
Guy in crowd: Any stage dancers tonight, Billy?!
BC: I’m sorry?
Guy in crowd: Any stage dancers tonight?!
BC: No, we’ve retired the stage dancers. We’ve retired a lot of things, uh, it being a new millennium. Um, no more dancing, no more fun, um, um, no more happy songs.
Heavy Metal Machine
Iha: Thank you. That was...that was harder to play quiet than to play loud, it was (trails off laughing). But we hope you liked that. This is our, uh, big promo tour of America and we will be coming back and doing a proper rock -– hella rock jam...in a couple months. We’ll come back and play all your favorite Zeppelin songs, so come on back.
Age of Innocence
Girl in crowd: Thank you, Billy!
BC: Heh heh heh heh. How’s everybody doing in here? (crowd cheers) That’s not bad. How’s everybody doing out there? Hey, uh, people out there, should we stop the show now and get rid of these people in here?
Crowd: No!
BC: No? Somebody out there told me that you guys are the ones that cut in line and they’re the ones who got here first. (crowd disapproves) That’s what I heard!
1979 (Jimmy plays guitar)
BC: God bless you, thank you.
[encore break]
Iha: Whoo-wee. Alright, thanks a lot, guys, you’ve been rockin’ on up in the desert with us and we appreciate you coming out. We’re gonna rock one more jam...and then, we will rock again.
Join Together
[bow]
BC: Now, I want you to leave. Go, go away from this place and never return!
