Banter[edit | edit source]

DJ: This is The Smashing Pumpkins on The Wizard, WZRD Chicago.
Venus in Furs
BC: Hey man, turn up the bass.
> Snap
DJ: Hey, that sounded really great. What was the name -– what were the name of those last two cuts?
BC: Um, the first one was a Velvet Underground song, Venus in Furs, and the second one was Snap.
DJ: Right, right, The Velvet Underground, that's off the uh, the banana LP, right, right.
BC: Right.
DJ: Uh, do you guys have any cassettes out or LPs that are available or anything yet?
BC: We're gonna be on the uh, Light Into Dark compilation that's being put out. Um, the record release party is tomorrow, it's five bands: Poster Children, Price of Priesthood, um, Gold September and Ghost Swami and us, that's tomorrow at the Metro. Um, we are putting out our own cassette also.
DJ: Great.
BC: We haven't decided the title yet.
DJ: Great, hey, well, listen, everybody out in the listening audience, call us up, feel free, call us up, 794-2861, we'd like to hear your response. It sounds really great in here, so we’ll continue on, this is the Smashing Pumpkins playing live on WZRD Chicago.
BC: We have a little request for more bass.
D’arcy: Hahahaha.
BC: Just a little request.
My Eternity
> East
BC: Yeaah.
DJ: That was hot, that was really hot, what was the name of that one?
Iha: Haha!
BC: There's no title to it yet.
D’arcy: The Rock Song.
BC: Mommy.
Iha: Heh! It's called, uh....
BC: Um...
Iha: I wrote the song.
BC: ...Children of the World, Part 3.
D’arcy: Singing Out of Tune.
Iha: Opus of the Great Nations.
BC: (laughing) Singing Out -– Singing Out of Tune.
D’arcy: Yeah, heh heh heh heh heh. That’s more like it.
BC: Uh, uh, uh, uh. So....
Iha: You want us to do more?
DJ: Yeah, let me -– of course, you guys sounded really great, hey, what are –- your own man, let your own man say, how does it sound over the air?
Unknown guy: Great, it's great!
Iha: Heh!
DJ: Alright, that's your own man, it sounds really great, believe us. And uh, once again I just want to tell the audience if they’re just tuning in, you're listening to a live performance on the air right now by the Smashing Pumpkins, and why don't you plug that show again tomorrow and the record and everything?
D’arcy: Yeah.
Jimmy: Hey, tell ‘em where we’re playing again, Jordan.
BC: Um...huh? Oh yeah, oh by the way, we'll be playing at the Cabaret Metro tomorrow night.
D’arcy: Heh heh heh heh.
Iha: And uh, we open up for um, That Petrol Emotion next Friday.
BC: Yeah.
Iha: With uh, Voice of the Beehive.
BC: Uh oh.
Jimmy: We’re gonna use a playback track.
BC: This is called Cinnamon Girl.
Iha: (Kermit the Frog voice) One. (Jimmy starts counting into Cinnamon Girl) Yeah.
Cinnamon Girl
BC: Ouch.
DJ: Yeah! That sounded really great, yeah uh, I think Neil Young would be proud to say the least.
BC: Heh, thank you, man.
DJ: Yeah, I really liked that a lot. Hey, you know, I hope you've got more ‘cause you know, we'd love to hear it, the -– like another half hour if you've got it at least, you know.
BC: Um, well, we've got some more, it's just uh, we got to take it easy on my voice, I'm just a little sick.
DJ: Yeah, okay, plus, yeah, tomorrow night, right, right...
BC: Yeah.
DJ: ...well, do some instrumentals, heh heh heh heh.
Iha: (laughing) Yeah.
BC: Uh....
(Jimmy plays a brief lounge beat)
DJ: You're listening to the Smashing Pumpkins playing live on WZRD Chicago.
BC: Alright, we're gonna regroup, hold on a second.
DJ: Okay.
BC: Talk a lot, man.
DJ: And uh, they got on the air ‘cause I saw them play live and they sounded really great, so hopefully you'll go out and see ‘em play live, they're playing tomorrow night with four or five other bands at the Cabaret Metro and as they said, they're opening for That Petrol Emotion, so that ought to be a really great show. Um, also, listen, if you're in a local band and you want to get your chance at playing live on WZRD, what you do is send us a cassette, it's that simple, send us a cassette or a record -- it doesn't matter -- to WZRD, 5500 North Saint Louis Avenue, Chicago, Illinois, 60625 dash 4699. It's real simple. And, right now, we want, like I said, we're listening to the Smashing Pumpkins playing live on the air and we'd like to hear from you, it sounds really great, that Neil Young song that they just did was live, that was not a recording, what you're hearing is live, I know it sounds really great, but it is live, call us up, 794-2861 is the number here, we'd love to hear from you.
BC: Alright, this is an old song called There It Goes.
There It Goes
> Nothing and Everything
BC: Hey, man.
DJ: Wow, I liked that one a lot...
Iha: Heh heh.
DJ: ...yeah, I really liked that one a lot. Hey, we're getting some really great audience response too.
D’arcy: Oh no!
DJ: But uh, we'd like to hear some more, 794-2861 is the number here. This is a live performance by The Smashing Pumpkins, they're playing down here on your radio, it's no charge, but tomorrow night, go see 'em by all means, they're playing with four other fine bands for their record release party. And not only that, the following they're backing up That Petrol Emotion, isn't that right?
BC: That is correct.
D’arcy: Yeah, heh heh.
DJ: That's great, man, that's really great. Local music hitting it big and we're doing live on WZRD Chicago with The Smashing Pumpkins.
BC: Should we play again?
DJ: Hey, by all means.
Under Your Spell
DJ: Alright, hey listen, I got a call from a guy out there named Wolf, he says he’s -- it sounds great and is looking forward to seeing you under a howling moon or something like that, but he's looking forward to seeing you and...
BC: Thanks, Wolf.
DJ: ...you sound great, man.
D’arcy: Wolfie, thanks, Wolfie.
DJ: 794-2861 is the number here and you're listening to the Smashing Pumpkins, they lugged down all their equipment and they want to hear some response and we want to hear some response. They're doing this for free, so call us up and let us know what you think, 794-2861 is the number here. Have you got some more for us?
BC: Yeah, we got a couple more. We're gonna try a new song.
D’arcy: No.
BC: Against the protestations of the band.
D’arcy: No, no.
BC: This is called Rhinoceros.
D’arcy: (laughing) No!
BC: (laughing) Yes, yes!
D’arcy: (laughing) No!
Jimmy: Is that that real slow one?
BC: That's that real slow one, yeah.
Jimmy: (laughing) Okay.
Rhinoceros
BC: (high pitched) Very good, very good, very good, very good.
Iha: Ah! Ah! Ahhh! Ahhh! Ah!
Jimmy: (high pitched) Ooh, see you on the television!
BC: Alright, uh...oh, here he comes again, I see the light on. Never mind.
Jimmy: There he goes.
BC: You can come on and talk, we're only gonna do two more songs now.
DJ: Okay, I wanna tell you that uh, Fran from Jack Scratch -– a good buddy of mine and one of the great guitar players in Jack Scratch –- just called up to say you guys sound great. And we're getting some other positive calls too, 794-2861, feel free to call in by all means, this band is playing live, the Smashing Pumpkins, playing tomorrow night at the Metro and they're playing tonight live, right here on WZRD Chicago.
Sun
BC: And the last song is called -– as soon as James retunes....
Iha: (noise).
DJ: Let me just say one thing, you guys got a lot of fans out in the audience, they're really calling up, definitely, and they really like the sound, they really like the sound a lot. Hey, why don't you plug the show one more time before you leave?
BC: Alright, the show is um, tomorrow night, uh, it starts at 10:30, there's five bands, we're the fourth band, not that you should skip anyone else but we'll probably be going on about 12:30. You wanna show up late and be cool, you know. And uh...
D’arcy: You gotta work.
BC: ...if you're one of the faithful, you can hear it, this little pop number that we've written up for everyone. Uh, uno, dos, tres, quatro.
Spiteface
BC: Thank you.
DJ: Hey, that was a really great show. Hey, thanks for coming down, everybody.
BC: Thank you, Joe Garza.
DJ: Hey, thank you for coming down, hey, the radio station and Sean and Greg did a really fine job here, definitely, hey, thanks again for coming down, once again, the Smashing Pumpkins playing live tomorrow night and backing up That Petrol Emotion. Should be uh, some really great shows, hey, break a leg tomorrow night.
BC: Thank you very much.
DJ: Take it easy, thanks again. The Smashing Pumpkins, doing a really fine job, thanks to my good friends Sean and Greg on doing such a...
unknown guy: Hey, isn’t this the Wizard?
DJ: ...fine job, fine job on uh, this radio station. WZRD Chicago is the name of this station and we just did the Smashing Pumpkins, sounding really great. Once again, they’re playing live tomorrow at the Cabaret Metro, they said they’ll be going on at 12:30, but uh, you wanna catch the other bands too, so make sure you go down and check that out.
