"The Good In Goodbye" (working title "Doomy") is the third song from The Smashing Pumpkins' rock opera, ATUM: A Rock Opera in Three Acts. Billy Corgan has described the song as a "cosmic Sabbath song" and one of his favorites off of the album. The beeping sound effect at the beginning of the track is a recording of the Sputnik 1 satellite (the first artificial satellite).[1]

Synopsis[edit | edit source]

(performed by The Seraphim)

In the story of ATUM, "The Good In Goodbye" is sung by seraphim angels, known simply as The Seraphim. The track begins with a beeping sound effect, which signals that the main character, Shiny, is breaking out of Earth orbit and onto the Sun as a form of noble suicide, known as "The March of Life." The angels are singing to Shiny. He seemingly is doomed to die, but the seraphim are foreshadowing that he is very important in this moment and his destiny isn't over yet. As Shiny passes by the dark side of the moon, he notices unexpected things on its surface, and ultimately realizes that the universe and the world presented to him are not what they seem.[1]

Lyrics[edit | edit source]

to dank doom
to dank fire into the black at heart
anointed ones, provided sons
who are the last to rule
trade on, receivers, he ain't coming to
for far have i wandered at last
into your bughouse ruse
'round dead moon
to transpire
behind the blast of an ark
we fed hearth
we draw dire
to the edge of fear
lay down your winters
'lay down', cried faith
for once you've left as your father's son
you're blessed as the dove i face
we shine as we all shine on
shine as we all shine
trade on, deceivers
as sound removes the thorn
he's grown still and borne this great repast
it's into the coming
he's into the coming morn
shine as we all shine
we shine as we all shine on
shine as we all shine
