"Samantha" is a song by Hole that was co-written together by Billy Corgan, Courtney Love, and Linda Perry. The song was originally planned to be the lead single for Nobody's Daughter,[1] but ultimately was not released even as a single reputedly due to the controversy over its composition. It did however have an official music video, directed by Pablo Ganguli and Alphan Eseli.

Background[edit | edit source]

"Samantha" is one of twenty-six original songs that Courtney Love wrote following her six-month lockdown in rehab in September 2005 after violating drug probation.[2] With additional musical input from Billy Corgan and Linda Perry, the song was composed and recorded in 2006, and later reworked the 2008-2009 recording sessions for Nobody's Daughter.

As on Hole's "Celebrity Skin", Billy Corgan composed the main guitar riff to "Samantha" whilst rehearsing with Love at The Village Recorder in Los Angeles. Corgan's lead guitar recording, originally featured on a studio version of the song, was omitted from the final mix by Love and replaced with a cello.[3] Corgan has claimed that the song, along with others such as "Pacific Coast Highway", cannot be released without his approval, saying that he "has not signed off on any of those songs" and "so it would be a real big problem."[4] "Pacific Coast Highway" was eventually released as a single, indicating that Corgan's issue may have been resolved.

Lyrics[edit | edit source]

Samantha, you swore
You never turned that trick before
Keep waiting for a war
You'll never win
You'll lose again

Watch her wrap her legs around this world
Can't take that gutter from the girl

Samantha
You burned me out
Samantha
It's over now
Samantha

Your war
Was a lost cause before I came
Keep praying
Pray for
The pretty things you won't get back

Watch her wrap her legs around this world
Stab the gutter right out of that girl
That girl

Through villages of ether
My crucifixion comes
Will you sing my hallelujah?
Will you tell me when it's done?

Look in my eyes
There's nothing there
Goodbye
I wanted you out of my whole life
Goodnight
And don't try to move

People like you fuck people like me
In order to avoid agony
People like you fuck people like me
In order to avoid suffering

People like you fuck people like me
Fuck people like you
Fuck people like me
Fuck people like you
Fuck people like me
Fuck people like you
Fuck people like me

(Fuck people like you)
Leave your money by the bed
(Fuck people like me)
(Fuck people like you)
In the gutter where you live
(Fuck people like me)
And I throw it all away
And I throw it in your face
And if you were on fire
I would just throw kerosene
Cause I love so much I hate
And I hate what you have seen in me

Samantha

So you think that you could save him
And we know that someone died
Oh, an unkindness of ravens
And we know that Mary lied
And through villages of ether
Oh, my crucifixion comes
Will you sing my hallelujah?
Will you tell me when it's done?

People like you fuck people like me
In order to avoid agony
People like you fuck people like me
In order to avoid suffering

People like you fuck people like me
Fuck people like you
Fuck people like me
