Oceania: Live in NYC is a live video album by The Smashing Pumpkins, recorded at Brooklyn's Barclays Center in New York City on December 10, 2012. The concert was originally scheduled for Halloween night in 2012, but was postponed due to Hurricane Sandy.[3] The 24-song show was released on several home audio and video formats on September 24, 2013, including in three-dimensional form. It documents a performance of the band's 2012 album Oceania in full,[4][1] followed by a career-spanning setlist. The film was directed by Milton Lange, and the DVD and Blu-ray editions include interviews with stage designer Sean Evans as well as a photo gallery.

Background[edit | edit source]

The large-scale production and stage show of the Oceania tour was in part inspired by Roger Waters' The Wall Live tour. Billy Corgan had seen one of the shows in recent years, and reached out to Waters' stage designer, Sean Evans, to do something similar for The Smashing Pumpkins.[5] The result was an elaborate moon-shaped backdrop with a mixture of strobe and mood-setting lights that accompanied the songs. The band used new video-mapping technology to capture the performance in 3D and record in 5.1 surround sound.

Critical reception[edit | edit source]

The Seattle Post-Intelligencer called Oceania: Live in NYC "an essential Smashing Pumpkins offering", praising the elaborate production, Corgan's vocal range, the dueling guitar solos with Jeff Schroeder, and Mike Byrne's Neil Peart-ish flourishes. In addition to Pumpkins classics and new offerings off of Oceania, the cover of David Bowie's "Space Oddity" was singled out as a highlight.[5] AllMusic called the video an "intense" multimedia experience and gave it a rating of 4 out of 5 stars.[6]
