The Early 1989 Schwa Productions sessions were for the first demo tape, aptly titled The Smashing Pumpkins. Also included on the tape was a live version of "She" and a remixed version of "Sun" from the previous Ignoffo sessions. A reproduction of the tape was included in the 2012 Pisces Iscariot remaster. An alternate mix of "Jennifer Ever" featuring just guitar and vocals was found on a bootleg mixtape that at once belonged to Mark Ignoffo (hence the name of the bootleg is The Ignoffo Tape).

Recordings at Schwa Productions were done on an 8-track reel-to-reel over the course of three days (which may not have been consecutive), at the rate of $20 an hour. All band members were present and recorded their own instruments, except for "Nothing and Everything" which did not feature guitar from James Iha. The master reels have apparently been lost, as they are no longer in the band's possession. Consequently, the release on the 2012 Pisces Iscariot reissue was remastered from an original demo cassette.
