Humanity: Hour I is the sixteenth studio album by German hard rock band, Scorpions. "The Cross" features vocal contributions from Billy Corgan.

Humanity: Hour I generally received very good reviews. AllMusic called it a "perfect balance between nu metal guitar crunch and '80s heavy metal melodies" and lists "The Cross" as one of the suggested tracks.[1]

Background[edit | edit source]

Corgan has expressed his fandom of Scorpions, particularly the song "Dark Lady" which he said influenced "Tarantula" off of Zeitgeist.[2] In fact, Humanity: Hour I was recorded at roughly the same time as Zeitgeist, both at The Village Recorder, and this is how the collaboration came to be.

Scorpions guitarist and founding member Rudolf Schenker said in an interview: "I wanted [Corgan] already as a special guest for the Moment of Glory project … but they couldn't get in touch with him. When I was in Los Angeles before we started Humanity: Hour I, he invited me into his studio. He was so happy to see me and to talk about Scorpions and talk about he has all this pirate stuff and even some recorded from fans from the Tokyo Tapes and all that stuff and I mentioned that I wanted him for the Moment of Glory album and he said ah, too bad that that didn't work out. I said … we have a song called "The Cross" and it would be fantastic if you can sing on it. … So in this case it was so natural … Billy came one day with his headphones and there he was, doing his part, and it fit perfectly. I like Smashing Pumpkins, especially his vocals, I like his work very much. He is a great musician, an outstanding kind of guy."[3]
