Fotheringay

"Fotheringay"
Song by The Smashing Pumpkins

"Fotheringay" is an unknown song by The Smashing Pumpkins. It appeared on at least five setlists for early shows of 2015's In Plainsong tour, scheduled to be played before "Cardinal Rule" during the final encore. However the song was never actually performed, and on some dates "Cardinal Rule" wasn't either. The setlists sometimes had the annotation "maybe" around the closing songs, suggesting they may have been skipped due time constraints with the venue.

"Fotheringay" is the name of a song by a British folk band called Fairport Convention. The song served as the B-side to their single covering Bob Dylan's "I'll Keep It with Mine". Both songs appeared on Fairport's 1969 album, What We Did on Our Holidays.[1] The following year, songwriter Sandy Denny formed a short-lived folk rock band called Fotheringay. They disbanded in 1971. Sandy died six years later. Curiously, surviving members reunited to play a series of shows in June 2015, overlapping exactly with the same dates the song appeared on The Smashing Pumpkins' In Plainsong setlists.[2] Fotheringay's reunion shows took place in the U.K. while the Pumpkins toured America. Thus, The Smashing Pumpkins version of "Fotheringay" may be a cover of the original by Fairport, possibly also nodding to Bob Dylan whom is known to have had an influence on Corgan.[3]
