"Fireflies" is the eighth track from Act III of the The Smashing Pumpkins' 2023 rock opera, ATUM. Billy Corgan has said it is one of his favorite songs off of the album. Engineer Howard Willing even questioned why it wasn't considered as a single, to which Corgan gave the justification that most fans expect guitar music from The Smashing Pumpkins, though he agreed the song is single-worthy.[1]

Synopsis[edit | edit source]

(performed by Shiny to Ruby)

This song takes place at the now abandoned site where the exile ships were launched. Shiny and Ruby are both there. Shiny has allowed his pure consciousness through Ruby to make the next decision. Ruby decides that it would be best for his safety to return back to space. Shiny hesitates, but agrees that the world he's come home to is too messed up and isn't meant for him. "Fireflies" is his song about coming to terms with the decision.[1]

Lyrics[edit | edit source]

we stand on clover shield
hunted, yet unloved
seasick as one preys
through tasteless, dray haze

i'm waiting on your fireflies
to illume your lantern bright
pound fool, 'n penny-wise
waiting on your fireflies
'cause some dreams do survive
wise, ain't i?

daunted, 'midst ghoulish brides
embracing on glassed sand
we should clasp hands
come cherish where i stand

i'm waiting on your fireflies
to illume your lantern bright
pound fool, 'n penny-wise
waiting on your fireflies
'cause some dreams do survive
wise, ain't i?
