BC: Good evening! Thank you for being here with us tonight. It’s amazing to celebrate the music of the greatest band...ever. They were pretty good, those Beatles. You know, I was standing backstage before the show and uh, suddenly this kind of mystic pixie walked by me and it was Donovan. The Hurdy Gurdy Man. Mr. Mellow Yellow. And uh, I had never met Donovan before, it was a great honor for me and uh, he told me that this next song that we’re going to do, he actually taught John Lennon this picking pattern, so I’d like to thank you, Donovan, for helping create this song. Cheers to Donovan, wherever you are.
Julia (acoustic)
Rick Nielsen: Wow. Well, ha, well, great stuff there, Billy. Thank you all for coming out tonight and uh, thank you. Can we have the lights on here in the Hollywood Bowl please? Lights, lights, lights please, lights please. Okay, we’re not gonna have the lights on, but uh, if the lights were on, doing a show like this is obviously a lot of fun, I think we’re all big fans of the Beatles. And uh, that includes all the guys in Cheap Trick, we’ve had the pleasure and honor of working with both George Martin - I mean Sir George Martin - and Mr. Geoff Emerick on our fourth studio album called All Shook Up and I’d like to say a special hello to Geoff Emerick, he’s up in the booth up there mixing us right now. Big hand for Geoff Emerick right now. I’d like to say hello to Rick Nielsen’s family, Bun E. Carlos’s family, Tom Petersson’s family, Robin Zander’s family. And I just I’d make a note that it’s a much safer place to be in the Midwest tonight because all those families are all here in Hollywood. We thank you. And uh, well, back in 1979 and the beginning of 1980, we went down to AIR Studios in Monserrat. (Billy walks up behind Rick and puts his hand on his shoulder) Hi Billy. Were you ever there in Monserrat with me?
BC: No.
Rick: He wasn’t there, Billy was just a little kid back then. Now he’s my big brother. And uh, well, we worked on some stuff down there with Jeff and George and uh, like I said, it was our fourth album and we created some orchestrations that when we were asked to do this for our second year, nobody had the orchestration pieces for the orchestra that I found in my basement. George didn’t have ‘em, Geoff Emerick never saw ‘em, he was too busy eating mountain chicken back in - never mind. And uh, so I wrote a song for that album and we’re going to do a non-Beatles song, but because of the working with Geoff Emerick and Sir George Martin with the original orchestrations. Here we go, this one’s called The World’s Greatest Lover.
Robin Zander: By the way, this one starts with Rick Nielsen.
Rick: Uh oh! Here we go.
